1302

1302: revolt, battle, turning point

Experience the Battle of the Golden Spurs as if you were there yourself!

Every half hour, the Count's Chapel is transformed into a breathtaking sound and light show, with compelling animations immersing you in the growth and flourishing of the Earldom of Flanders. The story moves seamlessly into the causes of the Battle of the Golden Spurs, until you find yourself in the middle of the battlefield.

At the 12-metre-long experience table, among other things, you put on a knight in proper attire, see on models how the conflict and the battle itself evolved, and experience in the viewers how both a French knight and a Flemish weaver experienced the battle. The French king and Pieter De Coninck also give their views on the conflict here.

The absolute highlight of the museum experience, however, is Oxford's authentic coffin. Explore this more than 700-year-old object with your eyes, and then dissect it on screen in minute detail.

You will round off your visit with some insights into the path the battle and the lion took to become a symbol of Flanders, and the concept of identity takes on multiple layers.
